Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer (LTQ XL, Thermo Scientific)

Funded by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)

Thanks to a grant from the state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and the European Union and the support of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), a high-performance ion trap 'LTQ XL' LCMS and MSn system from Thermo Scientific was aquired in 2018.

The acquired equipment uses the latest ion trap technology. It has a linear ion trap for different fragmentation modes. The device parameters such as scanning speed, detection limit, resolution, processing of complex samples and different ionization techniques (ESI, APCI, APPI) are ideal tools for structure determination in the field of natural product chemistry as well as for complex reaction mixtures. However, ion trap technology with a linear ion trap is particularly important for MSn measurements in chromatographic runs. Also, the benfit of this method is the direct infusion technique using a syringe pump. Based on this technique, many analytical data can be obtained in very short periods of time. The zoomscan function and the ultrazoom measurement also allow precise determinations of the actual molecular mass in the case of higher aggregated systems, especially in the group of secondary plant constituents. The LCMS system LTQ XL is therefore an ideal tool for the handling of demanding analytical questions in the working group "Technical Chemistry" at the Institute of Chemistry.
